Truthfully, the first line should read, "Sharp Vs a Crystal Angel Bull named Bad Boy..." It's human nature to put a "Good Face" on things wicked, or, perhaps the adage, "Don't judge a book by its cover" comes to mind.
Jim Sharp's Top Guns Bull Rides, recently held in Odessa, Tx. had some of the "best of the best" in not only riders but bulls as well; including 12 from the pens of Crystal Angel Bucking Bulls of Gardendale, Tx. One in particular going by the name of, "Bad Boy".
Seems as how "Bad Boy" [a.k.a. B.B.] has a habit of dislodging riders... Quickly. So quickly in fact; there has not been a single rider to make the buzzer. 45 in a row and giving new definition to U. S. Smokeless Tobacco's Challenger Tour. Emphasis on "Challenger"; and the quality of bulls in the Top Guns Bull Rides.
In the bull-riding world, a challenge develops when a bull develops a reputation such as Bad Boy's. With that reputation generally comes an added "Bounty" to the rider that is able to make the 8 second ride. The Odessa event and Bad Boy were no different. The only thing missing was a "Wanted Poster" tacked to a tree. The bounty? $5,000.00 for a full ride.
As with all outlaws worthy of a bounty, we wonder where they hide and why they are as they are. Bucking bulls are no different except in the case of where they hide. Good bucking stock and specifically Crystal Angel's Bad Boy is hidden away in Gardendale, Texas; just a stone's throw north of Odessa and in the constant care of Crystal Doelling and father/business partner, Jay Doelling.
By Crystal's own admission, she'll tell you her bucking stock is treated more like pets than range animals. The bulls are apparently appreciative of the kindness and "act" as pets in her presence. Lending credence to the thought that there are "Smart" bulls who really know their role in life and have no problem showing their "bad" side from time to time. Nevertheless, whether its the bull's brains, genetics or a genuine nasty attitude; Crystal's greatful for the opportunity to showcase her stock's "on demand" bad attitudes in the Top Guns Bull Rides in addition to Texas Youth Bull Riding Association Events and Local riding events and perform at a level befitting the show. Even the rosiest of roses has thorns...
Putting on a show that will be remembered. Top Riders. Top Stock. Big Purses. That's the name of the game for Jim and the Top Guns Bull Rides. Bad Boy will be fondly remembered with every withdrawal of Jim's bull-hide wallet as he pays for his steak... 46, and counting.
